Kent's first job after leaving school was to work with his father which commenced his formal commercial diving career that he has practiced all of his life. He acquired his first scuba diving equipment in the early fifties as a teenager with the purchase of two CG45 Jaques Cousteau and Emil Gagnon twin hose regulators and three steel tanks which were the first scuba gear commercially on the market in 1947. Kent's grandfather, Captain Bertie Bodden was the Cayman Islands first hard hat diver and also salvaged the George Town wrecks the m/v Balboa and the Cali and Kent's father Captain Wellesley Eldemire from Cayman Brac was senior salvage diver with Merritt Chapman and Scott Company one of the world's oldest and largest marine salvage organizations. In 1963 Upon the Independence of Jamaica in 1962 Kent was seconded as the Diving Training Officer with Jamaica Defense Force. He was then transferred to HMS Lochinvar in Scotland and assigned to HMS Lewiston, Minesweeper and then to HMS Safeguard for the Royal Navy Training School where he qualified as a Royal Navy Master Diver. As a qualified underwater contractor for most of his life, he trained in cutting/welding, and explosives underwater. Provided salvage services for most of his career in the Cayman Islands, Jamaica, and Australia. One of his Cayman Connection jobs in Jamaica was to salvage and raise the Turtle Schooner Latona which had sunk at Wherry Wharf in Kingston Harbour, Jamaica. In the Cayman Islands he undertook various salvage jobs and repairs for the Kirkconnell vessels and also the Cayman Islands Port Authority where he assisted with official Marine Surveys and repairs. A founding Member of the Goldfield Foundation to bring the Goldfield back to Cayman and the first to train over 30 young Caymanians to scuba dive under The Duke of Edinburgh Awards Scheme. As a public servant, he trained members of the Royal Cayman Islands Police Force to dive.
As founding member and President of the Cayman Islands Watersports Operators Association in 1981-1982, he helped implement rules and regulations for safe diving including the use of a floating line for divers safety and a 10’ bar hanging under the boat as a safety measure to hold onto the bar before surfacing. He was also a founding member Cayman Islands Pirates Week Development Board and a member of the Cayman Islands Tourism Advisory Board in 1982 with a focus on promoting the Cayman Islands extensively overseas. He also established the cooperation of all the Dive Operators attending DEMA to have all the Cayman Islands booths in line to present this unique sales and marketing tool as ‘The Cayman Wall’ which won many accolades. The first Special Officer of the Cayman Islands Police Force attached to the Water Police Division as the Fisheries Officer to enforce conservation laws, rules and regulations. He’s worked to identify and secure the Marine and zones and the first known diver to scuba dive the 12 Mile Bank.
