While the goldentail moray does have a distinctly gold or yellow tail, its tail is often tucked in the reef and may be difficult to see. The brown body is covered with yellow spots overall. The size of these spots variable, but they are usually small. Smaller than the green moray, the goldentail reaches a maximum length of only 2 feet (0.6 m).The goldentail moray is common throughout the Caribbean, including the Cayman Islands. It inhabits shallow to mid-depth coral reefs, hiding in holes or crevices during the day, exposing only its head. At night it becomes an active hunter searching the reef for small fishes and invertebrates.
