This small grouper is recognizable by its body shape as well as color and pattern. It has a long pointed snout. The body is white to pale yellow with a pattern of at least 5 dark bars. The tail and dorsal fins are covered with several small dark spots. This fish grows to a length of 4 inches (10 cm). The harlequin bass is found throughout the Caribbean, including the Cayman Islands. It is one of the more common types of small bass. It inhabits reefs, seagrass beds and rubble areas. It feeds on small crustaceans that it picks from the sand with its pointed snout. It may be solitary or in pairs.
