Terminal phase adults are bluish-green with a large area of yellow above the base of the pectoral fin and extending toward the tail. The tail is squared off. It blue with orange or pink upper and lower edges. The dorsal fin and anal fin are bluish with a bright orange or pink stripe extending horizontally through each. Initial phase adults and juveniles are black and white striped. The upper and lower edges of the tail are dark brown. Adults grow to a length of 12 inches (30 cm). The princess parrotfish is common throughout Caribbean. It inhabits coral reefs. It is an active swimmer, stopping to feed by scraping algae from rocks and coral with its "beak". Initial phase adults form large feeding aggregations. At night, the princess parrotfish secretes a mucous cocoon and goes to sleep.
