The body is dark brown with a lighter greenish gold area on the head and chest. The tail is bright yellow. Small adults may have bright blue spots on the head, upper body and dorsal fin. Juveniles have bright blue spots on a dark blue or bluish brown body, giving them the alternate name of "jewelfish". Juveniles have a clear or white tail, unlike adults. Adults grow to a length of 7.5 inches (19 cm).The yellowtail damselfish is common throughout the Caribbean. It inhabits shallow coral reefs. Adults are territorial, feeding on algae that grows within their individual range. Juveniles are often seen among the branches of fire coral.
