Love & Adventure: A Couple’s 4-Day Cayman Brac Escape

day 1: Explore the many caves of Cayman Brac

There’s no better place to experience adventure with the love of your life at your own pace than Cayman Brac. A short 25-minute flight aboard Cayman Airways Express is all it takes to get to Cayman Brac from Grand Cayman. After you’ve grabbed your luggage, you can either grab a taxi or rent a car from one of the rental companies nearby and explore “the Brac” at your leisure.

No matter where you stay, you’ll always be within reach of all the necessities and then some on Cayman Brac. Check in at most properties is after 3:00 PM but be sure to ask the staff if an early check-in is possible when making your reservations. Once you’re on island, and ready to start your Cayman Brac vacation, kick things off with one of the best parts of the Cayman Islands – FOOD!

Whether it’s breakfast from Star Island Restaurant, lunch from the Tipsy Turtle Bar located at the Cayman Brac Beach Resort, or a plate of jerk chicken (good at any time of day) from Barry’s Golden Jerk, you’ll find something to satiate your appetite after a long-haul (wink) flight from Grand Cayman. After you’ve refueled, it’s time to explore the geology of Cayman Brac

The caves of Cayman Brac are far more than just amazing geological features. They represent decades of shelter for generations of Caymanians (with those from Cayman Brac affectionally dubbed Brackers) during major storms in the past. Nowadays, you can see engravings of visitors and natives alike. Take some time to explore the many caves located all throughout the island. If you meet any of the residents of these caves (bats and hermit crabs aka “soulja crabs”) you need not worry. They’re just as friendly as the people of Cayman Brac and won’t bother you at all as you take in the beauty of the limestone formations of the caves. Check out Rebecca’s Cave if you want an interesting story about the legendary 1932 storm. If something a bit more scenic is your forte, check out Bat Cave located on South Side.

After a day of caving, check-in to your hotel or rental unit (if you haven’t already) and unwind. After freshening up, we know what’s on your mind – MORE FOOD! If you’re interested in having a nice sit-down dinner, take a visit to Dutchie’s Bar & Grill located at The Alexander Hotel. We recommend Cayman Conch Fritters and Penne Pasta with chicken and alfredo sauce. Be sure to complement whatever delicious food you get with a tantalizing rum punch.

Once you’ve replenished your fuel tank, head out to Barracuda’s Sports Bar for a great selection of drinks, good music, friendly customer service, and even friendlier locals. Play a game of darts or just enjoy the laid-back vibes of Cayman Brac as you wind down day 1 of your Brac-cation.

day 2: Explore the love below

The Cayman Islands, and especially Cayman Brac, is known for its world-class scuba diving. Whether you are a seasoned diver or just trying it out for the first time – our local divemasters have all the equipment and information you need to explore our blue Caribbean sea. Reef Divers, located at the Cayman Brac Beach Resort, offers a variety of dive packages for divers of all experience levels.

If you’re staying at a resort, we’d recommend kicking your day off with breakfast at the resort. After you’re fueled for the day, head over to Reef Divers to meet your dive master for the day and get prepared to explore the world below the surface. Visit exhilarating dive sites such as the Wilderness Wall or the legendary MV Captain Keith Tibbetts and experience the world of blue that is the Caribbean Sea.

After you’ve experienced the world class diving of Cayman Brac, hit the surface and enjoy some lunch at the Tipsy Turtle Pub – located at the Cayman Brac beach Resort. Give the Jerk Chicken Wings and Mac & Cheese Fritters a try. Wash it down with a tasty Cayman Lemonade to put the bow on an adventurous day.

After you’ve returned to your accommodation to freshen up and unwind, take the scenic route and go for a drive along the South Side of the island, where you’ll drive for miles without once running into traffic (or another car for that matter!). Take in the hues of the sky as the Sun begins to set on the Cayman horizon. For a picturesque view, head to the end of the western part of South Side for a POV unmatched. Let the colours of golden hour bathe you and your loved one in an aura you can’t find anywhere else.

After a calm afternoon taking in the natural beauty of Cayman Brac at your pace, head to the Beach Club Bar & Restaurant (open from Fridays to Sundays for lunch and dinner) to cap off another day of exploration and relaxation on Cayman Brac.

day 3: Time Travel on Cayman Brac

Cayman Brac was one of the first of our three islands that were spotted when we were founded. Many generational Caymanian bloodlines have their roots in Cayman Brac. The stories and remnants of a time gone by surround you as you travel throughout the island. The North side of the island, where most locals live, is filled with character that has been developed for generations.

After grabbing breakfast at an establishment of your choice, explore artifacts from the past at the Cayman Brac Museum, then go for a short scenic drive around the Stake Bay loop to get a front row view of the Stake Bay coastline. After taking those sights in, head East to the Cayman Brac Heritage House to learn more about the trades, skills, culinary traditions and many more aspects that formulated the identity of our people. They host a variety of cultural events and workshops that take you on a dive further into our culture. Be sure to give them a call at (345) 948-0563 to find out if there’s anything fun going on during your stay!

Once you’ve caught the cultural bug and want to take a piece of our culture home with you, head further East into the historic district of Spot Bay. It is the Easternmost district of Cayman Brac (and the Cayman Islands as a whole) and is home to many multi-generational families. Family homes are not a rare sight here, with many families occupying entire roads! Head to NIM Things for a true, authentic, Caymanian artisan experience.

Ms. Starrie and her amazing husband, Mr. Tenson Scott, are two of the best crafts experts to talk to. Their store is littered with newspaper clippings of the many achievements, inventions, and crafts that the both of them have become notorious for. Pick up a pair of unique Caymanite earrings, or a thatch hat woven completely by hand to take home. The art and crafts that these two make are more than just souvenirs. You’re taking home a part of history and culture that will never be replicated again. If you have some time, have a chat with Mr. Tenson about the old days!

After indulging in history, we figure you’d be ready for some good Cayman eats. Grab a late lunch at the Blue Breeze Café. They have a variety of local food (aka “cook food”) on the menu as well as made to order items as well. They’re right next door to the famous Pioneer Bakery, where you can get yourself a loaf of fresh “Brac Bread”. Its unique spiral shape is unmistakable. Have a slice with butter and tea for a peaceful afternoon snack!

Once you’ve eaten, head across the street to the Panama Canal. No, not THAT Panama Canal, but a sight to see, nonetheless. If you go at the right time, you’ll find several elders and former seamen of the community out there playing dominoes. If you think you’re up to par, they’ll happily let you join! Feel free to ask them about their many voyages at sea and learn about the people that helped develop Cayman Brac into the community it is today. Be sure to capture your own version of the famous Titanic scene by the railing overlooking the crystal-clear waters during sunset.

After a day of living like a local, head back to your accommodation for a quiet evening reflecting on the travel through time. Feeling for some late night eats? Check out Brac Snack Shack for a Cheeseburger complete with their secret sauce that is a local fave! Not feeling for fast food? Don’t worry, check out what on the menu at the Captain’s Table restaurant and enjoy a couple of beverages at this idyllic island-style patio bar.

day 4: This isn’t goodbye, just see you later!

After 3 days of adventure and culture with your loved one, it’s time to return to Grand Cayman (we don’t blame you if you extend your stay by a day or three). Stop by Kabana Kai Café for fresh pastries and coffee before your flight. We advise you to be at the airport at least 1 hour before departure to avoid any issues. We know you’ll miss the charm of Cayman Brac. That just means you must come back again! The seafarers will be playing dominoes right where you met them.
