Kitesurf Cayman

Kitesurf Cayman

With warm turquoise waters protected by a reef and trade winds coming in from the west, Barkers Beach in the West Bay area of Grand Cayman is the perfect spot for kitesurfing. Head instructor and owner of Kitesurf Cayman tells us why:

Tell us a bit about yourself:
My Name is Jhon Mora and I’m originally from Colombia. I am a professional kite racer and head instructor/owner of Kitesurf Cayman. I moved to Cayman nine years ago to start the kite school at Barkers Beach after meeting my business partner Walter Fajette and Neil Galway in Peru where I used to run my own school too. I fell in love with the island, the people, the quality of life and the kiting conditions. After travelling the world and competing on the Kiteracing tour for three years I realised that Cayman is one of the best places in the world to kitesurf. It was after that that I decided to live here permanently and grow the sport on the island.

Kitesurf Cayman is centred around the quality of teaching and the quality of our equipment. Together with the instruction and near perfect conditions, we offer the best service you can get when it comes to learning how to kitesurf. We teach all ages from seven years old up to 70 years old and the customer satisfaction we get speaks for itself.

Why is Cayman one of the most appropriate destinations for the sport?
Usually. when the winds are strong the seas get rough but in our spot. we are protected by the reef so the waters keep calm even on a windy day. 80% of our teaching area is waist deep water so customers can easily stand if they feel they need to. There are no swimmers or boat traffic so the whole lagoon is for kiters to enjoy the wind. The lagoon is also exposed to a high range of wind directions – when we have wind it’s for 24 hours a day and the fact that the island is flat keeps the wind quality really good. We use the online wind forecast which is 95% correct, therefore it’s easy to help to schedule your day according to family activities. In other destinations, you’ve got to wait around for the wind.

Kitesurf Cayman offers two-hour private lessons (one on one) for US$260 or semi-private (two people one instructor) for US$150 per person. Kite equipment is available to rent and lesson packages are available. Kitesurf Cayman also runs a courtesy shuttle for customers from their accommodation to the kite beach, free of charge.
