Having been introduced to Don Julio’s Master Distiller, Enrique de Colsa, on day 1 of the Cayman Cookout at the “
Meet the Distillers” session, we were excited to learn more about this premium brand’s journey and, of course, sample some of the finest tequila in the world.
“When you have passion, you have everything” – Don Julio Gonzalez
Enrique de Colsa described Don Julio’s passion and how he was driven by a single goal of crafting the world’s finest tequila through revolutionising the entire process, from the way the agave is grown and harvested to the shape of the bottle.
We sampled 5 tequilas from the Don Julio collection, each paired by a tasty bite by the Ritz-Carlton Grand Cayman’s talented culinary team. First up was the classic Don Julio Blanco Tequila, paired with a Shrimp Cocktail Tostada. The crisp agave notes of the tequila paired beautifully with the citrus of the lime and cilantro from that dressed the tostada.
Our journey of flavours included Don Julio Reposado paired with a Duck Mole Lasagna, Don Julio Anejo paired with a “Taco de Cochinita” and a smooth, charcoal filtered, Don Julio 70 Anejo Claro Tequila paired with “Smoked Skirt Steak Gordita”.
The dessert course, an Agave Flan, was perfectly paired with the caramel and toffee notes of Don Julio 1942, with its vanilla fragrance and sweet agave-laced finish. A most outstanding end to an incredible journey of history, culture and cuisine.
