Azure vase sponge

Azure vase sponge
Phylum Porifera (sponges)
Callyspongia plicifera
0 to 100+ ft
The glowing pinkish-purple color certainly makes this sponge stand out on the reef. It grows in the shape of small (up to 16 inches or 40 cm high) tube-like vases. The outer surface has deep grooves that are often iridescent blue, while the inner surface is smooth apart from the pore openings. The azure vase sponge is common throughout the Caribbean. It inhabits shallow reefs, often growing on the vertical face of the reef. It will grow singularly or in small clusters of 2 - 3 "vases". Brittle stars and crinoids are frequently found inhabiting the interior of this sponge.
