The head and front of the body is dark brown-black while the rear portion is almost white. Individuals can vary greatly as to where the dark color ends and the light color begins. A golden patch may be present on the lower side between the dark and light areas. Adults grow to a length of 4 inches (10 cm). The bicolor damselfish is common throughout Caribbean, inclduing in the Cayman Islands. It inhabits coral reefs at depths from 20-80 feet (6-24 m). It is territorial, aggressively defending a small area. It feeds on algae and detritus.
