Phylum Mollusca (snails, nudibranchs, bivalves, squid & octopus)
Octopus briareus
0 to 100+ ft
Rarely seen in the daytime, the octopus is one of the great hunters of the night. Highly intelligent and capable of rapid changes in both color and skin texture, it is a master of disguise and able to slip through the smallest of openings. Follow quietly and you may be rewarded by seeing the octopus envelop an entire coral head in search of its prey. The Caribbean reef octopus is common throughout the region, including the Cayman Islands, and is seen by divers on most night dives. It inhabits shallow coral reefs, where it is reclusive by day.
