Dog snapper
Lutjanidae (Snappers)
Lutjanus jocu
61 to 100+ ft
The body is pale gray to reddish brown. A pale triangular patch under the eye distinguishes the dog snapper from other snappers. This fish grows to a length of 3 feet (0.9 m). The dog snapper has an extensive range, from Massachusettes, Bermuda, and north Gulf of Mexico, throughout the Caribbean and to Brazil. It inhabits reefs, as well as wrecks and rocky inshore areas, preferring depths from 30 to 120 feet (9 to 36 m). It will drift alone in secluded areas of the reef, but forms large spawning aggregations.
