The body color varies from reddish brown to pale gray. The rows of scales on the upper body are diagonal, often with dull red or brown pigment spots in the center of each scale. Often a diagonal line runs through eye. The rear edge of the tail may be dark. The gray snapper grows to a length of 2.5 feet (0.75 m). The gray snapper ranges throughout Caribbean and north to Massachusetts, Bermuda, Gulf of Mexico, south to Brazil. It is common in the Caribbean, including the Cayman Islands. It inhabits reefs, seagrass beds and mangrove areas. It is generally found in small groups.
