Scorpaenidae (Scorpionfishes)
Epinephelus cruentatus
0 to 100+ ft
The color of the body varies from light gray to dark brown and is uniformly covered with reddish-brown to dark-brown spots. There are always three or four distinct black or white spots just under the dorsal fin. The spots may be dark or light, and can change color to contrast with the rest of the body. The tail is well rounded. The graysby reaches a length of 1 foot (30 cm). The graysby is one of the most common groupers on the coral reef, and is found throughout Caribbean. It typically rests on the bottom of small caves or under ledges. If approached slowly, the graysby will allow divers to come close. It eats shrimps, crabs and small fish.
