The head of the great hammerhead is characteristically "hammer" shaped. The front edge is slightly convex and there is a slight indentation at the center. (The scalloped hammerhead, which is not common in our area, has a deeper central indentation as well as additional grooves to the side that give the head a distinct "scalloped" appearance). The teeth are serrated. As its name implies, the great hammerhead grows quite large; reaching 20 feet (6 m).The great hammerhead is found worldwide in tropical waters. Although it inhabits oceanic waters, great hammerheads are occasionally seen along steep drop-offs, such as Grand Cayman's North Wall. They are considered dangerous. The great hammerhead feeds on fishes, particularly stingrays and eagle rays, as well as on crustaceans.
