Pomacentridae (Damselfishes)
Stegastes diencaeus
0 to 30 ft
Adults are dark brown to black with no distinctive markings, but there may be a blue outline on rear dorsal fin and anal fin. The dorsal and anal fins are elongated and pointed, extending well past the base of the tail. Juveniles are bright yellow with a black spot, ringed in blue, on the upper body and dorsal fin. Bright blue lines or rows of spots extend from snout across head onto upper body and dorsal fin membranes. The longfin damselfish grows to a length of 4 inches (10 cm). The longfin damselfish is found throughout the Caribbean. It inhabits protected, shallow inshore areas and coral reefs. Adults establish territories, which they vigorously defend from intruders. Juveniles are so different from adults in their appearance that they were formerly thought to be a separate species, the honey damselfish (Pomacentrus mellis).
