Phylum Cnidaria (hydroids, jellyfish, corals, sea anemones, black corals and gorgonians)
Tubastraea
0 to 100+ ft
Easily overlooked in the daytime, these corals put on an exciting show by night. During the day, they are only seen as a series of short rounded "pipes" that are usually dark green in color, while at night a large, bright orange polyp extends to feed from each "pipe". These polyps are larger than those of most hard corals, making each of the tentacles clearly visible. Orange clump corals are not widespread throughout the Caribbean, being abundant in some regions and absent in others. They are sporadic around the Cayman Islands, however some dive sites are known for their large populations, which make for great night dives.
