Phylum Cnidaria (hydroids, jellyfish, corals, sea anemones, black corals and gorgonians)
Dendrogyra cylindros
61 to 100+ ft
Colonies grow from a common base into large pillar like projections, giving this coral its common name. Unlike most other hard corals, the pillar coral has its polyps extended in the daytime for feeding, giving the coral a "hairy" appearance. The polyps are yellow to beige in color. Colonies can grow quite large, reaching a height in excess of 6 feet (2 m). The pillar coral, found occasionally throughout the Caribbean, generally inhabits deep coral reefs (over 80 feet or 24 m). However, one of the most well known colonies in the Cayman Islands is located in just 40 feet of water at Aquarium Reef off of Seven Mile Beach.
