Silversides are most easily recognized by their behavior and habitat, as individual fish are too small to scrutinize closely. Large numbers of silversides will form dense schools within caves, grottoes, wrecks or any other place offering shelter. These schools are quite active moving with amazing synchronism. Individual silversides have a silvery body that is dusky greenish above. The head is the same width as body when viewed from above. They usually have a prominent silver stripe along their side, hence the name. Silversides grow to a length of 4 inches (10 cm). Silversides are found throughout the Caribbean and are quite common in the Cayman Islands. They feed on plankton. In turn, they are hunted by several types of large predators, including jacks, tarpons, and trumpetfish.
