Holocentridae (Squirrelfishes)
Holocentrus coruscus
0 to 100+ ft
The reef squirrelfish, like all members of its family, is reddish in color with thin white to silver strips running the length of the body. The tips of the spines in the first dorsal fin are white and there is a prominent black blotch between the first three or four spines. Several white spots can be seen where the dorsal fin meets the body. The reef squirrelfish grows to a length of 4-5 inches (10-13 cm). The reef squirrelfish is found throughout the Caribbean, including the Cayman Islands, but is not considered common. By day it inhabits crevices in the reef. It can be found on both exposed seaward reefs and protected inshore reefs. It feeds on crustaceans.
