Saddled blenny

Saddled blenny
Saddled blenny
Clinidae (Clinids and Blennies)
Malacoctenus triangulatus
0 to 60 ft
Females are pale yellow to tan while males are more orange in color. Four large, dark triangular shaped bars or saddles mark the back and sides of the body. A dark band crosses the base of the tail. The saddles and tail band are brown in females and more purplish in males. There is a single large dark spot, sometimes diamond shaped, between each of the saddles on the lower sides of the body. Small, bright red spots may cover the body, particularly in the darker areas. The saddled blenny grows to a length of 2.5 inches (6 cm). The saddled blenny is common throughout Caribbean, including in the Cayman Islands. It inhabits coral reefs, rock and areas of coral rubble, where it perches on bottom. It is carnivorous, feeding on small bottom dwelling invertebrates.
