The head, snout and body are elongated. It is reddish brown to yellowish brown in color, usually with a white reticulated pattern. The upper body tends to be darker, but this fish can change color, paling or darkening rapidly to camouflage with its surroundings. It grows to a length of 3.5 inches (9 cm). The slender filefish is found throughout the Caribbean. It inhabits reefs at depths between 10-60 feet (3-18 m). It often drifts among the branches of gorgonians in a vertical position, where it is very well camouflaged.
