Scorpaenidae (Scorpionfishes)
Scorpaena plumieri
0 to 100+ ft
The body is brownish in color with blotchy markings. There are three dark bands on the tail. A large area at the base of the pectoral fins is jet black with white spots. This can only be seen, however when the fish raises it pectoral fins as it does when it is alarmed or threatened. It is thought that this contrasting coloration may serve as a warning to others that the animal has venomous spines and will do damage if provoked. This is one of the largest scorpionfishes, growing to 18 inches (46 cm). The spotted scorpionfish is the most common scorpionfish in the Caribbean.. It is a bottom-dwelling inhabitant of coral reefs and rocky bottoms, where its camouflage allows it to blend in with the surroundings. It will sit motionless on the bottom and will then suddenly lunge forward to catch small fish or invertebrates that come within striking range.
