Whitestar cardinalfish
Apogonidae (Cardinalfishes)
Apogon lachneri
0 to 100+ ft
The body and head are typically bright red. There is always a black spot to the rear of the dorsal fin with a bright white patch, the "whitestar", located just behind it. This cardinalfish grows to a length of 2.5 inches (6 cm). The whitestar cardinalfish ranges from South Florida and the Bahamas to Belize. It inhabits coral reefs with clear water from 15-200 feet (5-61 m). During the day, it hides in holes or crevices, but emerges at night to feed on zooplankton. Divers are likely to see this fish on night dives.
