It’s not often the British Royal Family visits The Cayman Islands. But it’s not often this popular Caribbean destination opens a new airport, either.

TravelPulse Canada is the exclusive trade media outlet invited to watch the ceremony, so stay tuned, royal family watchers.

Their Royal Highnesses, the Prince of Wales and the Duchess of Cornwall, aka Prince Charles and Camilla Parker-Bowles, are set to officially open Grand Cayman’s newly-expanded Owen Roberts International Airport today as part of a two-day visit.

The expansion project has tripled the size of Grand Cayman’s airport, which officials say will allow the destination to accommodate nearly 2.5 million passengers a year.

The airport will include a new larger departure hall, a food court, a VIP lounge, a children’s play zone, new dining options, added washrooms, a room for moms and babies and also some new shops.

Workers on Tuesday were busy hammering and painting all around the airport as planeloads of sun-seekers from Canada, Britain and other spots arrived for an early spring holiday.

Thursday (March 28), the final day of the royal visit, has been declared a holiday in The Cayman Islands, which are a British protectorate.
