Cayman Islands Department of Tourism supports local artists’ sales during Coronavirus lockdown

The Cayman Islands Department of Tourism (CIDOT) has shown its support for local Caymanian artists during the Coronavirus lockdown by creating a new distribution channel for their art.

The ‘Cayman Art’ webpage aims to back local artists and businesses, raising their profile and showcasing their art to a global audience while tourists are still prevented from visiting the destination.

Regional Manager for CIDOT Europe, Adrian White, commented: “The UK team of the CIDOT has been looking to come up with innovative ways to support local Caymanian businesses during the lockdown, especially those affected by the lack of tourism. The ‘Cayman Art’ page is a great way to showcase the talent, vibrancy and diversity of artists that we have in Cayman and provides an alternative distribution channel to having visitors see their work on island.”

The page has been created on the main tourism site www.visitcaymanislands.com and showcases local talent from a variety of mediums, including painting and pottery. The art scene in Cayman is teeming with talent from an array of artistic and creative backgrounds, and featured artists include Shane Aquârt, aka Dready, a Caymanian artist famous for creating bright and whimsical art, with a frequently humorous take on the familiarity of life. Widely regarded as one of the Cayman Islands’ most successful visual artists, Shane’s early work centred around a playful stick figure character – Dready – which became enormously popular throughout the Caribbean and led to him adopting the pseudonym.

Also featured are local trio 3 Girls and a Kiln. Each of these three artists comes from a different art background, resulting in vibrant, fun designs inspired by island life. From ceramics to paintings and upcycled gifts, the studio offers a full range of items to purchase. They also offer a regular schedule of ceramic classes for those wanting to explore their creative side while visiting the Cayman Islands.

Visitors to the site are given the chance to purchase the art, supporting the artists who may largely rely on tourism for revenue, while in turn having a little piece of the Cayman Islands at home. The page can be found at www.visitcaymanislands.com/cayman-art.
