CIDOT Invites Stakeholders to Weekly Virtual Tourism Series

Cayman Islands 5 November 2020
International Speaker Lineup to Provide Insightful Perspectives to Aid in Tourism Recovery
GEORGE TOWN, GRAND CAYMAN (5 November 2020) – In an effort to provide its on-island partners the opportunity to learn from some of the world’s leading authorities on a variety of topics germane to managing during the COVID-19 crisis and short and long term recovery efforts, the Cayman Islands Department of Tourism (CIDOT) is pleased to open registration for the Tourism Starts with Us: Virtual Tourism Series.

Each Tuesday at 11:00 a.m, the CIDOT will present opportunities for on-island partners and international travel advisors to engage with speakers, learn about new industry developments and connect with media. There is no charge for this program.

“As we all navigate the ever-changing realities of the COVID-19 pandemic, we feel there is value in providing interesting perspectives and offering tools that may help guide our partners while we continue to look for the best ways forward,” said Rosa Harris, Director of Tourism, Cayman Islands Department of Tourism. “Learning from respected leaders in a variety of industries can only give us more knowledge and provide the basis for ongoing dialogue regarding our return to tourism, and ultimately the expectations from all parties when that happens.”

The series kicked off with a special session for on-island stakeholders and international travel advisors on Tuesday, October 20 with Rafat Ali, CEO and Founder of Skift. Skift is the largest industry intelligence platform providing media, insights, and marketing to key sectors of travel. On the heels of the Skift Global Forum which took place last month, Rafat provided key takeaways from the event: What are the opportunities that may come from the challenges we are facing? How will travel, and the travel infrastructure evolve? What should the industry be adopting now and how should it adjust to be prepared for future success? The second in the series, 27 Oct, focused on infusing local culture and art into tourism businesses.

The remainder of the series will be open to the public, which started this past Tuesday with a session featuring Gary Denham, a 20-year veteran of the United States Navy Seal Teams and former Director of Instructor Development for the Naval Special Warfare Center.  He spoke about “Controlling the Uncontrollables”, and shared insights on how to empower people when crises strike, and offered guidance on how to operate in adverse situations which was extremely useful for those currently trying to navigate unsteady tourism waters in a time of unprecedented challenges.

Other sessions will look at hygiene requirements and balancing the need to ensure heightened disinfection with environmental and economic concerns; predicting epidemics and pandemics; the new tourism economy and the future of technology; and social media and how it can benefit tourism.
