The 2022 Air Show Dazzled the Skies During Cayman Thanksgiving Weekend

– After more than 20 years, the Air Show made a triumphant return to the Cayman Islands’ shores on the 3 and 4 December.

After more than 20 years, the Air Show made a triumphant return to the Cayman Islands’ shores on the 3 and 4 December. The highly anticipated event was attended by thousands in Grand Cayman and hundreds in Cayman Brac. The events were organised by the Cayman Islands Airport Authority (CIAA), Civil Aviation Authority (CAA) and Department of Tourism (DOT).

“I am thrilled to see that the Air Show was greatly enjoyed by the community in Grand Cayman and Cayman Brac—it was a nostalgic moment for many, including myself, and also a great opportunity for families to form new memories. We have a lot to be thankful for this year and so I think it was fitting that the events took place over Cayman Thanksgiving weekend,” said Hon. Kenneth Bryan, Minister of Tourism and Transport. “I commend the teams at the CIAA, CAA and DOT for organising a fantastic weekend of events.”

At Grand Cayman’s Flying Display over Seven Mile Public Beach, a talented line-up of international and local participants dazzled the skies: Skip Stewart, the Qyon Aero Sports Team, Kirby Chambliss and the Red Bull Air Force, a C-47 and the RCIPS helicopters. A highlight of the Flying Display was a PBY Catalina, the same type of aircraft that landed at Owen Roberts International Airport 70 years ago. This year’s Air Show coincided with and celebrated this milestone in Cayman’s aviation history.

In the afternoon at the Cayman Airways Hangar, the public was able to get up close to the planes and meet some of the pilots, parachutists, and crews from the Flying Display in addition to planes and crew from the U.S. Air Force, including the Hurricane Hunters, as well as the Royal Air Force.

On Sunday, residents in Cayman Brac enjoyed their own Flying Display, opened by U.S. skydiving team, Team Fastrax, and Aircraft Exhibit. Little Cayman was also included in the events as planes flew by the island going to and from the Cayman Brac event.

“Planning an event on a national scale, such as the Air Show, requires the involvement of many different entities. I am grateful for the support of the emergency services teams that ensured everyone could safely enjoy the events as well as the sponsorship from the government and private sector that helped make the Air Show a reality,” said Hon. Kenneth Bryan, Minister for Tourism and Transport.

“The Ministry for Youth, Sports, Culture & Heritage is honoured to have sponsored this historic event. For those who watched the air show, it was an exhilarating experience and for many brought back great memories of past events. We are delighted to have worked on this venture with the Cabinet Office and the Cayman Islands Department of Tourism,” said Hon. Bernie Bush, Minister for Youth, Sports, Culture and Heritage.
