Do I need a permit to film in the Cayman Islands?

  • Yes. Any commercial filming, including feature films, television, commercials, documentaries, branded content, and professional photo shoots, requires a Media Production Licence issued by the Cayman Islands Film Commission.


What types of productions require a filming permit?

  • A permit is required for: Feature films and television productions, Commercials and branded content, Documentaries, Reality TV and lifestyle programming, Professional photography, Drone filming, Student films (in most cases).


How far in advance should I apply for a filming permit?

  • Productions are encouraged to apply at least 4–6 weeks in advance of their proposed shoot dates. Larger productions or those involving drones, road closures, or protected locations may require additional lead time.


How do I apply for a filming permit?

  • Applications are submitted through the Cayman Islands Film Commission. Applicants must complete the filming permit application and submit all required supporting documents, including scripts or treatments, schedules, insurance, and location details.


Is there a filming permit fee?

  • Yes. The standard filming permit fee is KYD $150 (or USD $180) per production.


Do foreign cast and crew need work permits?

  • Yes. Non-Caymanian cast and crew are generally required to obtain work permits. The Film Commission assists productions in navigating the work permit process in coordination with Cayman Islands immigration authorities.

Do location scouts need a Temporary Work Permit (TWP) to scout locations in the Cayman Islands?

  • Yes. Non-Caymanian location scouts are required to obtain a Temporary Work Permit (TWP) to conduct location scouting activities in the Cayman Islands.

     

    Location scouting is considered work activity, even if no filming takes place and the scout is visiting for a short duration. This includes photographing locations, meeting with property owners, conducting feasibility assessments, or preparing location reports for a production.
